Web Designer Versus Client

closeThis post was published 2 years 2 months 14 days ago which may make it a bit inaccurate or irrelevant today. Things change and I cant keep checking old posts for validity. I wont be held responsible for any misunderstanding. Leon - Reverb Studios

Every now and then a situation comes up for me whereby a web design client will question a website graphical element or logo I’ve designed and suggest something different.

Fine normally, I’m open to different views and criticisms but what if they want something that is clearly wrong or what if they presume to know better than me even though they’ve presumably hired me for my expertise!?

Should I stand my ground or let the client ruin the site and have my name on crap? Is the customer always right?

Vote now..

Leon.

In the extreme, I would step back from the job, as I believe it is best way to let the client have his mind (if he doesn’t turn on the prospect of you stepping off) and save your reputation, name and sometimes mental health. If you have a good service contract for the job, the client will even have to pay for the work up untill you quit. –Regards, Chris

    Hi Leon,
hard situation without a service agreement, but I know 100% of what your saying, everyone with a pc is now a designer and often design for themselves and their own liking rather than focusing on their target Market. Sometimes they also miss out on the correct content as they are too busy fanning about moving the deck chairs on this sinking ship.

It’s hard to stand your ground but when ever I have given in, it’s come back to bite me in the ass later as it’s our reputation that gets hit the worst and even as recently as last week I lost out on a job because they said they didn’t like a similar job I did and I did what the client wanted.

    Grr.

The client must remember you ARE looking after their interest.
