I found out late last night (Sunday) that multiple websites on my client hosting account were hacked and showing messages from the hackers Turkish website. The problem seems to have been due to 1 insecure file on each site and not an actually password breach either of my hosting account or your website. The insecure file was changed to include code that redirected the visitor to another site.

All affected sites have now been fixed and the insecure file problem has been sorted.

This problem more than likely happened as a result of old and insecure versions of the WordPress content management system that I use to power most sites. WordPress and related plugins can be upgraded to latest, secure versions and while it’s not strictly necessary, there are benefits to be had from having the newest software.

Ideally, I’d keep all client’s WordPress powered sites updated for free but there’s just too many updates and too many sites so I charge a small yearly fee of €50 to keep things in order. Please reply to this email if you’d like to sign up for this or need more info.

Thankfully the broadband situation in Leitrim has improved since I first moved here in 2003. There’s even a bit of choice with 3, O2, Vodafone, Eircom and others all having a precence in the county.

As some of you may know already, the mobile operator 3 recently won the contract to roll out the National Broadband Scheme and are currently in the process of erecting masts and providing a minimum of 1.2 Mbps download speed at €19.99 per month to rural areas throughout the country.

As you may already know, I use the WordPress Content Management system and various WordPress Plugins to develop most of my web sites. The WordPress developers are constantly updating the software to iron out bugs and insecurities as well as add new functionality and speed.

The WordPress software version that powers your site is NOT automatically updated when the guys at WordPress release their updates. You need to manually update the system yourself if you want the latest version.

Plugin developers also release updated versions of their plugins to work with the new wordpress versions but these too are not updated automatically on your site.

It’s possible for you to update both the WordPress Core version and any plugins added yourself but in my experience incompatibilities and problems can sometimes arise which require greater knowledge and experience with the system.

I’d like to offer a kind of maintenance service/contract at a yearly rate which will include upgrading your WordPress powered site and plugins at least twice a year or if and when problems arise. I plan to charge around €50 per year for this service.

PS – I would like to stress that it is NOT necessary to update either the core system or any plugins included if your site is not broken so you are under no pressure to sign up to this service. It is however usually reccommended that you always have the latest versions of any software you run.

I’ve been in touch with the owner of a new site aimed at generating traffic for new Irish businesses and their websites and I’d now like to recommend the service to you.

It’s a forum based site and is free to signup and post articles but what’s different is that you can actually mention your business and your product/service. Most forums won’t allow this.

The site performs well in search engines so should generate some good traffic for you.

You will need to add business details, website link and a signature as well as participate in some discussions to make it more effective.

I’d just like to announce a couple of things that I can now do for existing and future web design clients that might be of interest.

Static Content Management

Most of my website design clients use the WordPress content management system to maintain their dynamic sites but for those who have static websites with no content management, I can now apply a new method of content management to their existing site. It involves applying some code to each page in the site and providing a web address and login where certain predefined sections of the site can be updated with full editing capabilities including image uploads.

Membership

For those who use WordPress, you can now have a Site Register and Membership section with which you can specify certain pages to be viewable by members only, eg – you could have a client section on your site which only your clients can login to and view protected content or free downloads.
