Twitter Poll: About People or Search Engines?

This post was prompted by something I read on an email list and on Linkedin the other day where the author seemed to have the view that Twitter was more about Search Engines than People. His argument was that Twitter is far too ‘noisy’ for people to actually read and interact but that Google could find it’s way around Twitter a lot easier and index content from it. It was therefore good practice in the author’s eyes that businesses auto feed to twitter in the hope of getting indexed and neglect the social aspect altogether. Here is the author’s summation at the end of his article:

Here’s my own conflicting and simple opinion on the best way to use Twitter:

READ other people’s tweets and get excellent and relevant info for free.
Return the favor and give your own valuable content to your followers.
Interact with people on Twitter and make valuable friends and business connections.
Brand your business effectively.

I think the above will guarantee longer lasting benefits to your business than simply hammering twitter for SERPS although this is beneficial too of course! Google has publicly stated that it will be indexing ‘live’ content from social networks even more in the near future. Here’s a recent article from the Google Blog about this:

Most potential new web design clients seem to ask the same question: What’s involved in setting up a web site? How does it all work?. Here’s a screen video tutorial I’ve prepared to help explain. I’ve included a synopsis underneath:

In summation so..

The step by step process I personally use is as follows:

Choose a Domain Name/Web Address in consultation with the client. Use an Availability checker and Google’s Keyword Tool to help choose.
I purchase the Web Address on behalf of the client and setup Website Hosting for them.
I install the Website Framework/CMS and plugin the template.
Client picks a Design Template upon which to base the look and feel of the site.
Client provides text and image content.
Client adjustments/suggestions.
Site goes live.
Client pays (sometimes!).

Simple, Fast and Efficient I think.

Website Effectiveness

Well done on having a website for your business but is it doing what it should, ie generating hits and sales leads? Here’s a few things you should really be doing to measure and improve your website’s effectiveness if you feel its not doing anything for you:

SEO

Are you sure your site has been properly optimised to do as well as it possibly can in search results. Have you got the right keywords, url and relative content? Here’s some more info on SEO.

Call to Action

You need to decide what the most important part/page of your site is and make sure its easily accessible. That might mean putting a call to action button or link in a prominent place so visitors are left in no doubt about what to do or where to go to enquire or buy your products.

Analytics

You should have some decent system of checking your website stats to see how many visits you are getting, at what times, for how long, what pages viewed, what keywords used, etc.. I use Google Analytics for this. It’s free and fairly comprehensive.

Refferal URL

You should have some kind of form on your site with a question that asks people where they came from or how they found your site. Also, if someone rings, get into the habit of asking them how they found your number.

Internet & Social Media Marketing

Once you’ve done all of the above you need to tell the world about your website and product/service and the best methods of doing that these days are the likes of Blogging, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and Online Advertising.

Website ineffectiveness can be caused by ignoring the above but it might also be a reflection on your product or market so don’t rule that out!

Linkedin and Facebook Twitter Integration

Social Media Marketing is big news these days but the one big turn off is the amount of sites you need to use regularly to be effective. Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Your Blog and a pile more all need to be updated on a regular basis if you are to spread your business gospel.

Personally, I’ve found that if you just update 2 of those, your Blog and Twitter, then the rest can get updated automatically. Here’s how..

If your Blog is Wordpress based then get the Twitter Tools plugin or some other good Twitter plugin and set it to post all your Blog articles to Twitter automatically.

Next, go to Linkedin and add the Wordpress application and give it your Blog address so it can pull in your posts automatically.

Next go to Facebook and add a Twitter application and give it your Twitter credentials and it too will pull in both your Twitter updates and subsequently your Blog articles.

For both Facebook and Linkedin, if you don’t want all your Blog or Twitter posts coming in but rather a select few then you’ll need to add your Twitter details to Linkedin and prefix (or suffix) your Tweets with #in. For Facebook, you’ll need the SelectiveTwitter application and then prefix Tweets with #fb.

If you’d like to send all your Business Blog posts to both Linkedin and Facebook, but not your sillier Tweets, then you’ll need to do all of the above AND add both the tags #in and #fb to the Tweet Prefix settings in your wordpress Twitter plugin settings.

Who and What to Follow on Twitter

Its all about Twitter these days with loads of users and business using it increasingly to brand themselves. For me, there’s 2 main ways to use it, to gain useful info and to market your own business. I want to talk about the first here and who best to follow to get great info and tips absolutely FREE!

You can use the Twitter site itself to search for Friends to follow. Simply login and type in a keyword related to what you want to know and you’ll get a list of people with the keyword in their name or who have posted a tweet containing your keyword then simply add them as friends. This will allow you endless information gathering possibilities but what’s wise from a business point of view is to search for things like “latest web design news”, “web design tips”, etc.. and you will undoubtedly be returned a pile of people who tweet nothing but all the latest and best news and tips from the web design world!

It might also be wise to search for Tweeters close to your location as its always nice to know whats happening around you. You might even make a friend or business partner! Try www.tweetmondo.com to search for local users.

I’d also like to mention a service for Twitter similar to Google Alerts where you can be alerted via email whenever anyone tweets about you or your business name or any keyword you pre specify. Its at www.TweetBeep.com

Import your RSS Feed or Blog to Facebook Linkedin etc..

I’ve recently mentored a few clients in how best to use Social Networking sites to promote their own business or website and I couldn’t help feeling by the end of each session that the client felt a little overwhelmed by either the amount of sites that needed to be updated or the perceived level of technical expertise and amount of time required to get things moving on each site. I’d like to try simplify things here.

The basic rule of thumb or modus operandi for me with all these Social Networking sites is as follows:

Register a FREE account (Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Friendfeed, MySpace, Bebo, etc are all free to use),
Add some relevant profile information and be sure to add a link to your web address somewhere,
Find some of your existing friends on the site and connect to them,
Find contact in your market area by searching for related keywords and connect to them also,
Import dynamic content (Articles, RSS feeds etc..) from your main site or blog to each site using site applications or widgets.

It’s the importing of content from 1 central location (preferably your own site) that makes these things manageable and apart from the initial profile setup on each site and networking you shouldn’t have to visit each site too often.

Within your Facebook, Linkedin, etc.. accounts there should be some section where you can add an application to your profile, so look for any RSS, Twitter or Blogging applications and add these to your home page. Then, whenever you write an article on your site/blog or Twitter, it goes straight into your social networking profile automatically, saving you some time!

Some of these networking sites can also communicate with each other so check out the settings in each.

Some applications I use and recommend are:

Facebook -”Simply RSS” and “Twitter”

Linkedin – “Wordpress”

MySpace – “RSS Reader” and “iTwitter”

Bebo – “Twitter”

Setup Google Alerts

Google Alerts is another excellent, free service from Google which sends you an email whenever someone mentions a keyword, specified by you, on any Website, Blog or News Article. Heres how to set one up.

If you visit www.google.com/alerts and signin/signup with your Google or Gmail ID, you will be presented with a simple form which allows you to specify:

The search term or keyword that you’d like to be alerted for.
The type of alert, eg Web, Blog, Video or Comprehensive (all).
The frequency of alert, eg Once a day, Once a Week or As it happens.
The email you’d like to have alerts sent to.

Once you specify these variables, you’ll start to receive alerts by email whenever someone includes your search term in any content they write for the web.

Heres an alert example:

Search Term – “Reverb Studios”.
Type – Comprehensive.
Frequency – As it happens.

The above alert will basically tell me straight away whenever anyone mentions my business name on any website worldwide and it will give me a link to the article or web page in which I appear!

Its a great way of finding out what people are saying about you or your business and which websites are linking to you.

Twitter & Twits!

For the uninitiated amongst you, Twitter is an online service that lets you tell people what you are doing. People can follow your ‘Tweets’ or updates and keep in touch with what you’re up to. But why would anyone care about you!?

Like Blogging, Twitter started out as personal service, a fun way to keep in touch with friends and family but it is now being used as a business tool by many including myself. The basic idea is you get as many people to ‘Follow’ your twitter updates as possible then you post a message and they all get it. Lets say you have 100 followers and you announce on twitter via a status update that you are offering discounts on your site, then 100 people are goin to see that message and possibly be interested in giving you money.

Similarly, you can advertise your services and knowledge to a wider audience by posting useful & relevant info. You can also follow other people and gain valuable information from whatever they say. People can receive twitter updates from various different sources including The Web, Mobile Phone, iPhone & Computer programs so it has great cross media potential to reach a large amount of people.

One word of caution though if you’re using it for business, don’t get carried away on an ego trip by constantly posting useless personal info! Who really wants to know what you are about to have for dinner!? If you find yourself ‘tweeting’ more than 20/30 times a day, get a life!

Website Accessibility

Making your Website ‘Accessible’ means making it easy to navigate for all visitors and in particular visitors with disabilities such as Blindness and Mobility. Its an important consideration these days as more and more people use the internet.Here are some of the more obvious and simple things you can do to make your site more accessible:

Include ‘Alt’ descriptive text on all images that are not decorative, ie – graphic navigation or informational images.
Omit the ‘Alt’ text on images that are purely decorative only.
Use the ‘Title’ html attribute on all navigational links and images to describe the purpose of the link/image.
Avoid using fixed size text including pixels, points, etc if possible, instead use a relative font size such as ‘em’ or ‘%’. This allows visitors to set their own font size and easier read your content.
Use ‘Label’ and ‘ID’ attributes on Forms.
Choose design colors that offer good text contrast, ie – black text on a white background or white text on a black background.
Keep your navigation the same on each page if possible. Every page on the site should be reachable within 1 click from whatever page you’re on.
Avoid Flash animation, Pop-up windows or any unnecessary tricks.
Make sure all your written content is clear, concise and simple to understand.

The SEO Implications of Moving or Changing your Website

For owners of existing or well established websites, the need may arise to make considerable changes to the site, either as a result of a New Company Name and Domain, a required Site Facelift or a change of Site Structure, perhaps with the addition of a Content Management System, or just a change of Hosting Company. Heres some things to look out for.

New Domain Name

You might change your main Company Name or identify a better ‘keyworded’ domain and need to change the actual address of your site and if its been well indexed in the search engines then it becomes a major issue. What you need to do is use something like Google Analytics to see which are the top sites that link to you and contact them to change to your new address. You also need to contact your SEO or Web Design Company and ask them to put in place a ‘Redirect Solution’ to redirect all requests for the old address to the new one.

New Look Site and Structure

If your site looks tired or if you decide you want to manage its content yourself and add a Content Management System then its quite likely that most of your site content and pages/links will change. As above, you can implement redirects for specific pages or you can add a custom ‘Error 404 page’ which includes a full sitemap with links to your most important new pages.

New Webhost

You might need to change hosting company the odd time, maybe your current one has too much downtime or as in my case, it goes bust and takes all my sites with it! This shouldn’t cause any major SEO problems as all the important stuff basically stays the same. Just wait a few weeks after the change and make sure your stats package is still registering hits for the site in its new location.

You can download or buy a plugin to do almost anytyhing you can imagine, from showing slideshows to managing full featured newsletter functionality. Heres a few of my favorite non-default plugins.

Exec-PHP – allows you to write and execute php code in widgets and content.
Loudervoice – allows you to write reviews on your blog which are then picked up by Loudervoice.com.
NextGen Gallery – create photo gallerys and flash slideshows with ease.
Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu – drop down menus for wordpress admin saving time and bandwidth!
Podpress – Full multimedia support and podcasting with a nice little player.
ShiftThis Newsletter – Excellent newsletter plugin with double opt in and newsletter management from admin.
TinyMCE Advanced – add extra buttons and functionality to the content editor such as tables.
WordPress Mobile Edition – make your blog easily viewable in mobile phones.
Subscribe to comments – let your commenters know when a post receives new comments.
WorsPress.com Stats – keep track of your visitors and most popular posts.
Wordpress Automatic Upgrade – easily upgrade to the latest version of wordpress to stay safe from security threats.

Remember to keep these plugins updated too once installed, you’ll see from admin which ones need updating.

5 Step Web Design Process

A lot of people calling about Web Design ask the same question “Whats involved with getting a website?” They want to know if they have to do anything themselves, how long it takes, can they manage the site etc.. Heres how it all works.

First step. In conjunction with the client we pick a suitable domain name that is a good keyword for their business area. I check to see if this domain name is available and if its the .ie version I request ‘proof of trading’ from the client. This is most often in the form of a Company Registration Number available from www.cro.ie
When the domain has gone through, I organize hosting for the site, ie – the physical location of the files and pages that make up the site and allow it to be viewed on the web.
I install the Content Management system or Website Framework for the site.
I sit with the client and take them through picking a suitable template for the site incorporating a color scheme and layout that suits their tastes and sector. I may direct the client to the template viewing area of my site so they can browse in their own time – www.reverbstudios.ie/web_templates.php
I request page content and images from the client to finish the site off. Alternatively, I can sit with the client and talk them through adding their own content and using the Content Management System themselves.

Most basic site builds take less than a week if all content is ready to go. E-commerce/Online Shop sites typically take a little longer.

My Web Design Process Explained

O2 Mobile Broadband Tips

Just a quick tip or two for anyone using any of the current Mobile Broadband offerings from O2, 3 or Vodafone but specifically for the ‘white’ O2 Modem which I have.

Sometimes you might find that you just can’t get a broadband signal and you hang around waiting, restarting the pc or bashing your head off the wall in frustration and the more you have to rely on the thing, ie – if you happen to depend on it for work! then the worse it is when it just refuses to play ball.

Lately I’ve had a good run of luck with mine, its found a broadband signal every day for most of the past 2 months and it could be a fluke but what I do when I can’t get a signal is go into the ‘Settings – Band Selection’ menu and switch between “All Band” and “GSM900/1800/WCDMA2100″ bands a couple of times with a minute or two pause between each selection. The switching seems to wake the modem up and it eventually picks up a signal, a bit like a lost cause heart patient, defying the odds and bouncing back to life!

Also, if you get a usb extension lead and stick the modem at the highest point or in the centre of your window pane, that somehow seems to help with the signal!

Or maybe I’m just imagining things!

O2 Mobile Broadband Moan

With more and more businesses finally moving with the times and getting themselves a website, I’d like to take the opportunity to point out a few common pitfalls to owning and running a site.

All to often, people pay a fortune for a site, get it up and then leave it there either not knowing what to do with it or not bothering to use it to its maximum potential. Also, people kind of expect the site to do the work and bring home the bacon! The amount of outdated sites out there both in terms of look and feel and age-old copyright notices is amazing.

Theres three main things you need to do when you have a site:

Promote it – simply having a site doesn’t mean people will visit it, you have to tell people about it by printing the address on your business cards etc, and submitting the site to search engines, directories and the like.
Update it – if people see, over the course of a year or two, that your site hasn’t changed a bit then it will reflect badly on you. You need to post regular news items, blog or change colors and layout once in a while to keep things fresh and let people know the site hasn’t been neglected. The search engines love sites that constantly get updated too.
Humanize it – websites can be a bit impersonal so try to write friendly welcoming content and add your picture someone on the home page. Also make sure you answer all communication from the site, especially emails, as soon as possible. Things like Blogs and Discussion Forums also create interaction with your customers/potential clients. All of this helps to prove that theres real people behind the site!

“Generic Host process for Win32 services has encountered an error and needs to close, sorry!” – This is a common error message for windows based computers and if its troubling you, please try the solution outlined above courtesy of Robert Loftus PC Expert.

“Generic Host process for Win32 services has encountered an error and needs to close, sorry!” – this problem relates to the operating system and not to your connection type. Basically windows has the hiccups and needs a gentle pat on the back so it can burp them out – just like a baby. Failing that if it doesn’t work, a two pound hammer swiftly delivered while you grin, wide eyed, foaming at the mouth and giggling like a naughty school girl should do the trick – just like a baby! OR USE LINUX OR GET A CAT!

What this means for you as the parent of your Microsoft Windows Operating System is that you will need to be patient, understanding, forgiving, and guide it as you TRY to make it do the things you want it to do rather than it doing whatever it wants to do – a baby.

Please follow these instructions in order to continue to enjoy your Microsoft Product – even though it will rarely do what you want it to do.

Shut Down Computer.
Start Computer and press F8 key.
Choose to start the PC in Safe Mode.
Log in as ADMINISTRATOR into Safe Mode.
Click Yes when warning displays.
Once PC has fully started, go into “My Computer” and locate C Drive.
Right Click C Drive, left click on last option – PROPERTIES.
Click on tools tab.
Click Check Now.
Make sure both boxes are ticked “Automatically Fix…” and “Scanfor…”
Click Start.
You may get a warning dialogue box to tell you that the computer needs to be restarted. Click on OK.

The PC will restart itself and begin the operation.

When complete it continue to start into windows as it NORMALY should.

PutPlace Online Backup Review

Review of Online Data Backup Site PutPlace.com

I’ve been testing out Irish site www.putplace.com today for a client and was quite impressed by it – using it myself now! Its an online Storage & Data Backup website and its VERY easy to use which is refreshing in this day and age when theres a lot of over the top content and functionality on the websites we visit.

You just sign up for a FREE (beta) account giving you UNLIMITED storage space for the duration of the beta. You then download an 8MB desktop application which handles your backups. Both the website and desktop software are very minimalist and very easy to use with only a handful of functions. Basically, you add a folder from your computer to backup, give it a name and click create and it saves it in your list AND uploads it to your putplace account.

The coolest part of it though is – when you modify or add a file to any folder you’ve added to the Putplace desktop application, it automatically uploads the changes to putplace there and then so if you leave it running and have broadband then you have a great, simple & automated backup solution.

Of course if you don’t have broadband then no online backup system will work well for you but don’t get me started on that!

I’m sad to say that following some research done just now I’ve found out that posting comments on other people blogs, (specifically blogs powered by wordpress) just so you can have a link back to your own site is kinda useless. Well on most Wordpress blogs at least.

I’ve been doing a bit of this myself recently and I think its been a bit of a waste of time. By default, wordpress seems to set all external links in comments as ‘nofollow’ links which means that most of the search engines including google will either not follow the links at all or if they do they wont index the linked to pages/sites.

Most wordpress blogs and sites ask for your name, email and web address when you post a comment and when the comment goes live the personal name that you put in becomes a link to your site and links to your site are great, the more the better but the search engines just wont take notice! The link can still be followed manually by other visitors to the blog so by all means continue to comment on other blogs but if you want to be noticed by the search engines then try to get links on non-wordpress sites or sites that don’t use nofollow.

Pingbacks and trackbacks seem to be treated the same way so these are pointless from a search engine point of view too.

*TIP – if you use the firefox or internet explorer browsers, theres a great SEO plugin called SEO QUAKE that will tell you whether a site or ‘Links page’ uses nofollow.
