It’s quite common to see a list of posts on a WordPress blog with meta info underneath each one displaying things like Post Time, Post Category, Author and the number of Comments the article has. For smaller blogs, there probably wont be too many comments left so you’ll see “No Comments” or “0 Comments” under a lot of the posts. I’ve always thought this looked a little sad on my own blog. Like, here I am slaving away on these excellent and informative articles and no one is reading or commenting on them!? Here’s a quick code edit to hide the “No Comments” text if there are none but show the number of comments and link to them if there are any.

Open the index.php file for your theme in a HTML editor and look for a line similar to this:

<?php comments_popup_link(’0 Comments’, ’1 Comment’, ‘% Comments ‘); ?>

Change this to:

<?php comments_popup_link(”, ’1 Comment’, ‘% Comments ‘); ?>

You’re just deleting any text that should be displayed when there are no comments so if there are none, then nothing will be shown. Geddit!?

You might need to edit this line in several other template files also such as Archive.php, Category.php, Search.php, Tag.php and anywhere else comment numbers are displayed.

Batch Upload to Dropbox via WordPress - Use a Wordpress contact form to upload files to your Dropbox account. http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/1703/batch-upload-to-dropbox-via-wordpress/ http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/1703/batch-upload-to-dropbox-via-wordpress/#comments Fri, 13 Aug 2010 14:17:45 +0000 Leon http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/?p=1703 I’m currently building a site for a local Pharmacy who would like to have the ability to allow customers to upload photos to be developed via an online form on their site. The catch is, they would prefer to have the files go to their Dropbox (File sharing/storage site) folder for easy processing. I done some searching for an off the shelf WordPress plugin and this one came closest but unfortunately, didn’t have batch capability and seems slightly buggy – WordPress.org/extend/plugins/dropbox-plugin.

I then got to wondering if it was possible to Email pics to Dropbox and found a few sites/apps that can do it well. This one seemed best – SendToDropbox.com.

So, armed with the above knowledge, here’s what I done:

Contact Form 7

This is one of the most popular FREE form plugins for wordpress and the current version includes the ability to add File Upload fields to a form. As many as you want. I setup a new form with standard questions like Name, Email, etc..and included a few upload file fields with specifications as to File Type, File Size, etc.. I then pasted in the automatically generated email address from SendToDropbox.com in the “To” field. Contact Form 7 also has the option to send the results of the form submission to a second email address and I setup a duplicate of the first email to go to the proper contact email address of the website, minus the file attachments, just so the website admin would get notification of newly uploaded files. Of course, the Dropbox PC software also alerts you straight away when new files are added to your folder. See below for Contact Form 7 settings:

Contact Form 7

SendToDropBox.com

This is a simple but cool site that connects to your Dropbox account and provides a custom email address that you can send emails and file attachments to. It also has a copule of extra features that process emails received such as: Automatic Unzipping, Email Content Inclusion and control over Dropbox Folder Names/Trees for emailed files, ie – files uploaded in this way can be added to folders named by Date, Email Address, Subject, etc..handy for keeping thigs organised and finding customers uploaded files! See below:

Send To Dropbox

Result

The end result is a normal looking contact form on the customers site that allows basic personal info to be uploaded to Dropbox along with files and photos. The website admin gets instant notification of new files added to his Dropbox account as well as email notifaction of the customer’s details. Nice!

Of course, it can be even simpler. If you just add an email address to the site like Upload@SiteName.com and have that forward on to the custom SendToDropbox email address then people can use the methods they already know for sending emails and attaching files and it will work just as good. I personally think it’s best and more professional to use the form method but perhaps a choice can be given.

Identifying WordPress Spam Comments http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/1533/identifying-wordpress-spam-comments/ http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/1533/identifying-wordpress-spam-comments/#comments Mon, 05 Jul 2010 09:00:49 +0000 Leon http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/?p=1533 WordPress users will know that there’s a default spam plugin called Akismet included that is fairly effective for automatically identifying and dealing with spam. If you’ve got comments turned on for your blog posts or pages then you’ll occasionaly get email notification of new comments which you must either Approve, Mark as spam or Trash and links will be provided in the email for each option.

There’s a new breed of spam that escapes filters like Akismet and appears to be a bit more real than traditional spam, ie – no mention of viagra or no funny email or web addresses with foreign lettering. They look and read like a manually created comment by a real person and probably are actually created in this way. Typically they take the form of complimentary comments about your content. Here’s one I got today for example:

“I loved this post. Very informative.”

The commenter added this web address – http://articledominance.com/freereport.html which appears to be a get rich quick offer/site asking for your email address and name, possibly to spam you some more!

My basic, common sense advice when you get comment notifications from your blog is to have a quick look at the commenter’s url/website and see if it looks legit. Also see if the commenter’s text is generic or actually relates specifically to something you’ve said in your post. As another general rule of thumb, if the comment doesn’t contribute anything interesting, related or useful to the discussion on your article then I’d delete it.

Here’s a few things, specifically to do with the commenter’s website that I would delete or mark a comment as spam for:

  • Overselling something,
  • Get rich quick content,
  • Asking for signups/email addresses,
  • Advert heavy sites,
  • Sites with tons of Google adverts,
  • Completely unrelated site.

External/Affiliate Link and Download Tracking in WordPress http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/1342/external-affiliate-link-download-tracking-in-wordpress/ http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/1342/external-affiliate-link-download-tracking-in-wordpress/#comments Mon, 22 Mar 2010 12:56:05 +0000 Leon http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/?p=1342 I write reviews on my WordPress blog here and obviously link to the website of the product or service I’m reviewing and it recently occurred to me that it might be handy to know exactly how many people I’m sending to these websites for free! I tried manually adding tracking to links in articles but that’s a bit tiresome. I tried one or 2 other plugins also but nothing has worked as well as the Google Analyticator plugin by Ronald Heft.

I vaguely remember using this plugin a few years back just to test but since I’m comfortable editing HTML/PHP files and manually adding Google Analytics code, I didn’t really have a use for it. Now that I was actively looking for an external link tracker plugin and found that this one did it, I was happy.

The plugin once activated in wordpress asks for your “Google Analytics UID” which is easily available next to your account in the Google Analytics dashboard. There are various options in the settings on what to track such as:

  • Admin users.
  • External Links.
  • Downloads.
  • Google AdSense.

You can even specify which types of file extensions to track by adding them to a list. This is handy for seeing how many people might rob your images! There’s widgets for adding stats to both the admin dashboard and public sidebar but I had issues authentication with  Google and couldn’t get them to work. Perhaps a hosting issue.

After a few days I checked the Content – Event Tracking section in my Google Analytics account and was happy to see detailed stats on what exact external links people were clicking on and which exact files were being downloaded.

My intended use for this will be to try to monetize the clicks from my site by agreeing click costs with the companies/sites I link to.

WordPress and Realex Integration http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/998/wordpress-and-realex-integration/ http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/998/wordpress-and-realex-integration/#comments Wed, 23 Dec 2009 22:30:33 +0000 Leon http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/?p=998 I am very pleased to announce that proper Credit Card and Laser transactions using Realex processing can now be taken on WordPress powered sites via the Shopping Cart plugin from Tribulant. I think this is a significant development considering both the recent popularity of WordPress as a full website content management and E-commerce system and the position Realex occupies as one of the world’s most popular credit card processors. I am also glad to have personally initiated, advised and funded the integration.

WordPress 2.7 Review http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/334/wordpress-27-review/ http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/334/wordpress-27-review/#comments Sat, 13 Dec 2008 02:33:13 +0000 Leon http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/?p=334
4/5

I caught a video of some of the new features in WordPress 2.7 a few weeks back and since then I’ve been eagerly awaiting its official release (no beta man me!). So it arrived yesterday and I finally got to play with it.

First off, I used WordPress Automatic Upgrade as always to upgrade to 2.7 and it done the job ok. Only ok I say because it never turned back on my plugins but maybe this was a blessing in disguise as I then decided to turn them all on one by one to see if anything cocked up. Out of all my lengthy list of plugins, all re-activated and only 2 had problems when I tried to actually use them again – ‘Share This Newsletter’ and ‘Loudervoice’. After some minor tinkering with Share This I got it working again but I await word on Loudervoice.

I also found that 1 or 2 plugins could be discarded as their functions are now covered in WP 2.7, ie – ‘Ozh Admin Dropdown menus’ because the new menu system is sleek and ‘WordPress Automatic Upgrade’ itself as WP 2.7 now has automatic upgrade built in. Yay!

My WordPress theme, K2 is sometimes a problem on these upgrades but everything seems fine there too and the main front end of the blog looks exactly the same so happy days!

Here’s some of my favorite features of the new admin:

  • Love the minimalist feel and design and like the new icons.
  • The new admin plugin installer lets you upload plugins directly from your pc which will make it easier for my clients to add their own plugins in future instead of me doing it or telling them to use ftp. You can also install external featured and popular plugins with a couple of clicks directly from admin.
  • You can customize the layout and tidy up most screens, eg – Dashboard, Edit Posts, etc.. handy for the OCD’s amongst us!
  • The new menu system is great and if you compress it it acts like a drop down/fly-out!
  • That afore mentioned built in automatic upgrade should be cool, hope it works as well as my previous plugin though.
  • Like the ‘QuickPress’ function on the dashboard through which I’m writing this post!
  • Love the Quick Edit’ function on the Edit Pages, Posts and Comments screens.
  • Liking the Bulk editing functions also.
  • The word count at the bottom of the description editor is handy!

Here’s some of my least favorite features:

  • The text at the bottom of the admin – “Thank you for creating with WordPress, etc…” is in italics and looks shit like all italics on the web!
  • Em, can’t think of anything else at the min….

All in all this new WordPress 2.7 seems to be built more efficiently both in terms of performance and time saving functions as well as giving you the opportunity to reduce clutter and generally speed up your blogging. It was worth the wait and excitement.

Leon.

You can download or buy a plugin to do almost anytyhing you can imagine, from showing slideshows to managing full featured newsletter functionality. Heres a few of my favorite non-default plugins.

FREE Plugins:

Commercial Plugins:

Here’s a few decent commercial WordPress plugins:

  • Shopping Cart – Full e-commerce system for your site with Realex credit card processing module.
  • Newsletter – Full newsletter system for wordpress al managed from the admin.
  • Banner Ads – Display adverts on your blog with rotation and stats.

Remember to keep these plugins updated too once installed, you’ll see from admin which ones need updating.

Important info on WordPress comment links http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/159/important-info-on-wordpress-comment-links/ http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/159/important-info-on-wordpress-comment-links/#comments Fri, 04 Jul 2008 23:16:26 +0000 Leon http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/?p=159 I’m sad to say that following some research done just now I’ve found out that posting comments on other people blogs, (specifically blogs powered by wordpress) just so you can have a link back to your own site is kinda useless. Well on most WordPress blogs at least.

I’ve been doing a bit of this myself recently and I think its been a bit of a waste of time. By default, wordpress seems to set all external links in comments as ‘nofollow’ links which means that most of the search engines including google will either not follow the links at all or if they do they wont index the linked to pages/sites.

Most wordpress blogs and sites ask for your name, email and web address when you post a comment and when the comment goes live the personal name that you put in becomes a link to your site and links to your site are great, the more the better but the search engines just wont take notice! The link can still be followed manually by other visitors to the blog so by all means continue to comment on other blogs but if you want to be noticed by the search engines then try to get links on non-wordpress sites or sites that don’t use nofollow.

Pingbacks and trackbacks seem to be treated the same way so these are pointless from a search engine point of view too.

*TIP – if you use the firefox or internet explorer browsers, theres a great SEO plugin called SEO QUAKE that will tell you whether a site or ‘Links page’ uses nofollow.

Fo more info on ‘nofollow’ see HERE.

WordPress Review http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/143/wordpress-review/ http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/143/wordpress-review/#comments Thu, 19 Jun 2008 20:15:39 +0000 Leon http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/?p=143

About this time last year I set about looking for some way of easily giving my web design clients what they craved – a simple, quick and cheap way of maintaining their own websites without resorting to buying expensive software, learning web design or paying me a fortune to maintain the site for them, something I’d rather not do anyway!

So having established that there was no easy way of adding content managment to an existing site, I googled “free cms software” and got introduced to the main players in the market, , namely: Joomla, Drupal, Simple CMS & WordPress.

The funny thing now as I look back was that even though WordPress appeared in my google search I didn’t cop that this was what it turned out to be, a free, downloadable piece of script that you could install at your domain name/website and use as a website builder/cms. Rather, I associated it with the hosted version at www.wordpress.com which I had been using and was impressed with for a few months previous.

After messing about with Joomla & Drupal and finding them way too complex and over the top for mine and my clients needs and after finding Simple CMS a little too simple, I continued my search, starting to feel a little disappointed. The SECOND I realized that there were 2 versions of WordPress, one of which I could use independantly of wordpress.com, I knew my atheist prayers were answered!

Heres a quick Feature list for this fantastic piece of web software, king of CMS and Blogging tools:

  • Add, Edit and Remove a limitless number of Pages & Blog Posts,
  • Install themes/templates in a matter of minutes, completely changing the look and feel of your site/blog,
  • Use purely as a website management tool and ignoring the Blog part,
  • Add external links easily,
  • Add link and blog categories,
  • Plugin integration to add almost any website functionality you can think of,
  • Automatic communication tools to communicate with other blogs,
  • Search Engine friendly – (Google loves WordPress!!),
  • Spam protection built in,
  • User Registration and multiple Authors/Editors,
  • Import Blogs from other popular blogging sites/platforms,
  • Text Formatting,
  • Add images, files, audio, video, etc..,
  • Add links,
  • Drag and drop widget/module layout control,
  • Ability to let users leave comments,
  • And a lot more..!

Try it – www.wordpress.org (not.com!)

Reverb Studios WordPress Theme http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/131/reverb-studios-wordpress-theme/ http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/131/reverb-studios-wordpress-theme/#comments Sat, 14 Jun 2008 18:46:43 +0000 Leon http://www.reverbstudios.ie/blog/reverb-studios-wordpress-theme/ I’ve done a lot of WordPress Content Managment System Installations for clients recently and while its absolutely fantastic it does have one drawback for a web designer (which I used to be!).

When you exclusively use wordpress to power clients sites you find your creative talents suffer a bit. You become a web site installer rather than designer and the only bit of creativity you get to engage in is logo or banner design or design tweaking so it can get a bit boring.

So I done a bit of research and eventually figured out how to design my own wordpress theme or template, borrowing the main wordpress framework and adapting elements of other themes so its a bit of a mashup. Its imaginatively entitled “Reverb” theme!!

If anyone wants to try it out and tell me how many flaws it has, heres a screenshot/download link!!:
